One killed, 13 missing as tropical storm Talas strikes central region

One person has been killed, 13 others are missing and thousands of houses damaged as the storm Talas made landfalls to the central regions early Monday morning, according to initial reports by local authorities.
Initial reports by the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue showed that Nghe An Province was most heavily hit by the storm with one death, 2,751 houses damaged and thousands of trees uprooted.
A vessel transporting coal which was anchored off Cua Lo Town in Nghe An was sunk with 13 crew members missing, the report said.
By 3 pm, six crew members had been rescued, two found dead while rescue forces were still trying to seek for other five.
Deputy head of the Ha Tinh Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, Tran Duc Thinh said on July 17 morning that they haven't got a final report on the damage caused by the storm yet but he predicted that the damage would be extensive.
Meanwhile, vice chairman of Loc Ha District People's Committee, Le Quang Hue said that initial reports showed that a school, a market and many houses in the area have been heavily damaged with roofs blown up and doors and windows broken.

Dozens of fishing boats anchored at Hon La Port in Quang Binh Province's Quang Trach District have also been sunk by strong waves that increased to four or five metres.
According to Quang Trach District's Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, 38 fishing boats have been sunk by four to five-metre waves by 3 am Monday. Seven cargo ships were stranded and seven people have been injured.
Storm weakens, flood rising
The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said that the storm has weakened by 4am on July 17 but heavy rains may cause landslide in the mountainous areas floods in some lower areas in provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh.
