Two venues for street vendors will be opened in HCM City at the end of August according to local authorities.

Nguyen Van Chiem Street is planned for street vendors.

Vice chairman of District 1 People's Committee, Doan Ngoc Hai told local media on Wednesday that they are opening two vendor streets on Nguyen Van Chiem Street and Bach Tung Diep Park on August 28 which aims to help local street vendors to continue their jobs as the city is trying to curb pavement encroachment.

“This will also help better manage food safety in the area," Hai added.

The plan to gather street vendors to several streets proposed by authorities in District 1 has been approved by the HCM City People's Committee in March.

According to the plan, food will be the main stuff on offer and street vendors will be trained about food safety and service management.

20 street vendors will operate their businesses on a 40-metre section of the Nguyen Van Chiem Street between 6-9am and 11am-1pm. At Bach Tung Diep Park, a section of 30 metres will be assigned for 15 street vendors who operate from 6-9am.

Hai said that they are considering opening more venues for vendors on the streets which have pavements of over three metres wide.

Vice chairman of HCM City People's Committee, Tran Vinh Tuyen, said that this will only be a temporary solution to help street vendors who are mostly low-income people to earn their living after the pavements encroachment is cleared.

"We will have to find other ways to help them," Tuyen explained. "The streets and pavements should only be used for traffic and pedestrians."
