Chief of the Khanh Son District People's Committee Office, Nguyen Huu Tho, told Dantri/DTiNews that the incident occurred at 9am in Ta Luong Village, To Hap Town and killed six people including three children at the family of Bo Bo Xiep. Two injured people had been rushed to local hospital.

Doctors take an injured person to hospital.

Initial investigations showed that it was an accident caused when Xiep's family were attempting to defuse an old mortar shell, which they found in a nearby farmland, Tho said.

A neighbour of Xiep family's Bo Bo Binh said that he was working at a farm near their houses when hearing a loud explosion.

"I was thinking it was a gas explosion," Binh said. "I rushed home to see the horrible scene. I don't know where they got the mortar shell. People in our village have recently stopped seeking for things left from the war to sell to scrap dealers because we know they are very dangerous.

Local military officers said that the pieces collected at the site showed that this was a 105mm mortar shell that was left from the American war.

Deputy chairman of the provincial people's committee, Nguyen Duy Bac led a delegation to visit the victims and direct the investigation into the accident.
