According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Pham Minh Hoang, 33, who was a store keeper at Hanoi Customs Office had exchanged fake ivory to steal 150 kilos of real ivory from the store.

Hoang had been suspended from the work right after he was uncovered in April, the department said, adding that investigations into the case were still ongoing with two more suspects identified.

The department has asked Hanoi Customs Office to strictly punish the officers for their offences and tighten regulations on keeping seized goods to prevent future violations.

In 2013, four staff including a guard and a store keeper at the Nghe An Province's Vinh City Department of Civil Judgement Enforcement were also prosecuted for stealing 200 kilos of ivory.
