Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien said that the organ transplant demand in Vietnam was very big; however, the number of organ donors remains modest.

Tien added that around 10,000 people currently need organ transplants and 300,000 are in dire need of cornea transplants. So it was important to call on the public to sign up as donors.

Vietnam currently has around 10,000 registered organ donors. Some 2,500 people have been provided with kidney transplants; 80 with liver transplants and 20 with hearts.
