Chairman of HCM City’s People Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong has rejected a proposal by the municipal Internal Affairs Department on banning civil servants from wearing jeans and t-shirt to their offices.

The move was made following a meeting between Chairman Phong and the municipal Internal Affairs Department and Justice Department on a code of conduct for the city’s public servants.

Under the code of conduct for civil servants at work proposed by the Internal Affairs Department earlier, the dress code for male public workers in HCM City would be a shirt and trousers, while female workers are required to wear ao dai, the Vietnamese traditional dress, trousers, suits, or knee-length skirts.

Meanwhile, public servants would not be allowed to wear jeans or t-shirts at work, except when participating in other activities organised by their agencies or offices.

They are also not permitted to drink alcohol or smoke neither at work nor even during break time.

Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong decided to remove the regulation on banning jeans and T-shirt at work after discussions.

The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho issued a ban on civil servants wearing jeans at work in September.
