The number of enterprises involved in export and import activities has increased sharply since 2012, according to the preliminary results of the 2017 Economic Census conducted by the General Statistics Office (GSO).

As at January 1, 2017, the number of enterprises operating in export and import activities had grown substantially since the 2012 Census, in line with Vietnam’s efforts at integration, with trade turnover heading ever upwards over the last five years.

Outsourcing activities were one of the key factors behind the high growth of exports and imports. Figures from the Census and the General Department of Customs show that the number of enterprises operating in purely processing activities (the import of raw materials from foreign orders and the export of finished products) stood at almost 4,200, primarily in the textile and garment industry.

Vietnam had more than 10,000 large-sized import and export enterprises as at January 1, 2017, up 29 per cent since 2012 and accounting for 1.9 per cent of all enterprises. Medium-sized enterprises increased 23.6 per cent in number, while small-sized enterprises increased 21.2 per cent and micro-enterprises 65.5 per cent, accounting for 74 per cent of the total. Notably, small and medium-sized enterprises increased 6 percentage points compared to 2012. Employee numbers fell 0.8 percentage points, indicating that the size of enterprises was smaller, according to the report.

The number of enterprises operating in export and import activities as at January 1, 2017 was about 63,000, an increase of 48.2 per cent since 2012. Annual average growth from 2012 to 2017 was 8.2 per cent, of which the number of export enterprises totaled 23,300, an average increase of 7.1 per cent per year, and the number of import enterprises was 55,100, an average increase of 8.7 per cent. Total enterprises were 15,400, for an average annual increase of 8.3 per cent.

As at January 1, 2017, there were 518,000 enterprises in Vietnam, of which 12,800 were in the investment stage and 505,000 in operations, up 55.6 per cent compared to the 2012 Census. The average annual increase in 2012-2017 was 9.2 per cent.

The non-State sector had 500,000 enterprises, an increase of 52.2 per cent compared to 2012 and growing by 8.7 per cent annually. The number of foreign-invested enterprises was 14,600, up 54.2 per cent since 2012, for an average of 9.2 per cent annually. The number of operating enterprises was only 2,701, down 18.3 per cent, or 607 enterprises, since 2012, due to the implementation of equitization, for an average annual decline of 3 per cent.

The service sector has the highest number of enterprises, with 362,000, accounting for 70 per cent of the total and up 57 per cent compared to 2012. Of these, 354,000 are operating, up 61 per cent.

Some sectors saw a sharp increase in terms of numbers. Those in education and training increased 155 per cent, in entertainment and arts 63 per cent, in science and technology 87 per cent, in healthcare 84 per cent, in warehouse and transportation 63.9 per cent, and real estate 63 per cent.

Industries seeing good growth included water supply, waste management and treatment, and waste water, up 73 per cent, manufacturing, up 40.5 per cent, and construction, up 43 per cent.

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector has the lowest number of enterprises, with 4,942, an increase of 27 per cent since 2012. There are 4,447 enterprises in operation, up 34.5 per cent since 2012, with growth averaging 6.1 per cent each year. Noteworthy is the number of agricultural enterprises increasing 50 per cent since 2012, as a result of recent policies attracting investment into agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

The final results of the 2017 Economic Census will be announced in the third quarter, according to the GSO.
