The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam under the Ministry of Transport approved of the plan on March 20.

Director of Hanoi Department of Transport Vu Ha said they had rearranged nearly 1,000 buses. The 400 buses left often go from provinces in the southern Hanoi to northern provinces including Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Thai Nguyen. They can go through Hanoi but are not allowed to pick up passengers.

"However, when travelling through main roads like the Ring Road 3, Pham Van Dong and Vo Van Kiet streets, they still pick up passengers randomly and cause congestion," Ha said.

When the plan is implemented, the buses will have to go through National Highway 1-elevated Ring Road 3-Thanh Tri Bridge-Nguyen Van Linh-Dong Tru Bridge-Hoang Sa-Truong Sa-Vo Van Kiet-North Thang Long or National Highway 1 or 3 when going into Hanoi.

Buses from the Eastern Hanoi will have to go through National Highway 5 or Hanoi-Hai Phong Highway-Dong Tru Bridge-National Highway 2 or Noi Bai-Lao Cai Highway. The buses that go from Hanoi to southern provinces will be directed to National Highway 32-elevated Ring Road 3-Phap Van-Cau Gie-National Highway 1A.

Phan Thi Thu Hien, vice head of the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, said they approved of the plan but still needed to consider the impact on transport companies. They have submitted the report to the Ministry of Transport. The ministry will give an official response.
