Over 21 tonnes of battery powder tainted coffee seized in Dak Nong

Police in the central highlands province of Dak Nong on Wednesday afternoon held a press meeting to report on their investigation into a large-scale fake coffee production at a local facility.

Speaking at the meeting, deputy director of Dak Nong Provincial Department of Public Security, Le Vinh Quy confirmed that the coffee manufacturing facility of Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan in Dak R’lap District used battery powder to mix with thrown-away substandard coffee and ground stone.

"We are trying to find out the purpose of this activity, whether the mixture is being used to make coffee and where they are selling the product," Quy said. "We have summoned Loan and her employees for our investigation but they are not co-operating."

Police investigations showed that the fake coffee has been sold to Binh Phuoc Province.

Meanwhile, head of Dak Rlap District's Police Department, Nguyen Tuong Vu told the meeting that Loan's facility had not been found to have committed any violations since operating in 2016.

Chairman of the district people's committee, Le Van Thi also added that they have sent food safety inspection team to carry regular check on local facilities but have not found any violations at Loan's facility so far.

On April 17, the police in Dak Nong collaborated with the inspectorate of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to carry out the raid at the coffee manufacturing facility of Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan following reports from local people.

They found tens of tonnes of coffee that were mixed with ground stone and substandard coffee.

The police have seized over 21.2 tonnes of substandard coffee mixed with battery powder, 40 litres of solution containing battery powder and 35 kilos battery shells.
