Hanoi Taxi Association has proposed to the municipal Department of Transport to remove taxi ban signboards in many streets of the city.

In a document sent to the Hanoi Department of Transport, the Hanoi Taxi Association cited the prime minister’s recent instruction as saying that it is necessary to give priority to public transport, including bus and taxi services with an aim to gradually restrict private vehicles.

The association added that taxi ban signboards in many Hanoi streets needed to be removed to ensure taxis could use routes.

A local transport expert said that many countries in the world ban private vehicles from certain streets at peak hours to give the way to means of public transport. However, Vietnam seems to believe it is an exception.

Bui Danh Lien, vice chairman of Hanoi Transport Association, said banning taxis in many streets in Hanoi at rush hours violates the road law as taxi is a mean of public transport. This has been recommended to authorities many times, but it has not yet been dealt with.

Currently, taxi and cars under nine seats and operating as paid passenger transport vehicles, including Grab, are prohibited to operate on 11 streets in Hanoi from 6 am to 9 am and from 4:30 pm to 7 pm every day.
