Five prosecuted in battery powder tainted coffee case

Police in the central highlands province of Dak Nong have prosecuted and arrested five people involving in the large-scale fake coffee production in the area.

Deputy head of the Dak Nong Provincial Police Department, Le Vinh Quy, confirmed on Monday afternoon that they had gathered sufficient evidence to prosecute Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan, 43, her husband Nguyen Xuan Bao and their three employees who directly participated in mixing substandard coffees, ground stone and battery powder at Loan's facility.

"Loan and her accomplices have violated food safety regulations stated at Article 37 of the Criminal Code," Vinh said.

Head of the Dak Nong Province People's Committee's office, Nguyen Xuan Loc also said that they have urged a speeding up of the investigation and prosecution of the case following PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc's direction on Sunday.

On April 17, the police in Dak Nong collaborated with the inspectorate of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to carry out the raid at the coffee manufacturing facility of Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan following reports from local people.

They found tens of tonnes of coffee that were mixed with ground stone and substandard coffee.

The police have seized over 21.2 tonnes of substandard coffee mixed with battery powder, 40 litres of solution containing battery powder and 35 kilos battery shells.
