Pupils in remote area study in school kitchen as classrooms deteriorate

Teachers and children at a nursery school in Phu Tho District are calling for financial support to help build better classrooms.

Classroom for three-year-old children

Talking about Dong Mang School Site of Trung Son Nursery School, Ha Tuan Hai, vice head of Yen Lap District Department of Education and Training, said only when the weather was clear for several days that people would dare to travel to the school. When it rains, the slippery, uneven and rising road and fear of flash floods prevent other people from going to the school. Hai said floods had claimed lives along the route.

Dong Mang School Site has three classrooms. The three-year-old pupils have to stay in a room with almost non-existent walls. The teachers use canvas to cover the classroom and part of the room is used as a kitchen. The pupils are mostly from the Dao and Muong ethnic groups.

Deteriorating building

Dinh Thi Dao, head of Dong Mang School Site, said, "Without electricity, we have to leave open a gap near the roof to let the light shine through and the smoke gets out. But when it rains, the room is wet and muddy. It's especially hard for the children in winter."

The deteriorating building nearby is the classrooms for the four and five years old. As the building was built 20 years ago as the village's common house, its walls have cracked and the roof leaks a lot. The teachers fear it may collapse at any time.

"Whenever it starts raining heavily, we run to take shelter at the medical centre 200 metres away," Dao said.

Due to various difficulties that the school can only admit 42 pupils while there are over 80 children aged three to five in the area. The school has seven teachers but no staff room. The teachers have to stay over at the houses of the locals during rainy days.

Tran Thi Hang, a teacher at Dong Mang, said, "We want to have new classrooms for the children. We also hope to get electricity and the road repaired."
