Workplace accidents killed 928 people and injured 1,915 others in Vietnam in 2017, according to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs' Labour Safety Department.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) on May 6 held a meeting in HCM City to launch the month on labour safety. The event saw the participation of Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam.

The cause of the accidents was mainly attributed to lack of safety labour knowledge of both workers and their employers

At the meeting, MOLISA Deputy Minister Le Tan Dung said that the number of workplace accidents in 2017 increased by 1% against 2016, but deaths fell by 6%.

In August last year, three workers died after falling from Newlife Tower apartment building project in the northern province of Quang Ninh’s Ha Long Bay. Meanwhile, in November, a tugboat accident killed four workers at Pha Rung Shipyard.

The cause of the accidents was mainly attributed to lack of safety labour knowledge of both workers and their employers along with substandard labour safety equipment and violations in labour safety.

Management agency supervision and reports on workplace accidents have remained lax, particularly in the cases without labour contracts.

The MOLISA also reported that last year, more than 3,800 people contracted workplace diseases, up 500 cases against 2016.

Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung requested employees to pay due attention to labour safety to prevent occupational accidents and diseases.

A survey by the MOLISA indicated that most young labourers in the agricultural sector are family labourers, so they do not have labour contracts. Meanwhile, more than half of young labourers at traditional handicraft villages were also in the same situation, except for villages having many enterprises.

Young labourers at companies at traditional handicraft villages often have to work more than 40 hours per week.
