A two-year-old boy in Hanoi’s outlying district of Ba Vi has suffered serious injuries to his face after being attacked by his family’s dog.

The boy was taken to the Vietnam National Paediatric Hospital on May 16.

After being hospitalised, the doctors conducted a three-hour plastic surgery operation for him to re-shape injured parts such as canthus and nose, lips and mouth as well as salivary gland,  said Dr. Dang Hoang Thom from the hospital.

Thanks to the intensive treatment, his condition much improved and he could drink milk just a day later.

Medical check-up after the surgery showed that his eyes could operate normally and he saw no infection.

He was discharged from hospital on May 21. Up to 95% of his treatment was paid by health insurance.

According to his mother, the incident happened while he was playing with a little dog and then was attacked by its mother. Several days later, the mother dog which had been given a rabies injection died.

After the surgery, the boy was provided with vaccinations.

Each year, the Vietnam National Paediatrics Hospital receives around 10-15 cases facing injuries due to dog attacks.
