American Vietnamese expelled for causing public disorder

American Vietnamese William Anh Nguyen will be expelled from Vietnam for causing public disorder during a recent protest in HCM City against a draft law on special economic zone development.

The trial of William Anh Nguyen’s case was held in HCM City today, July 20.

William Anh Nguyen, 35, from the US state of Texas was studying in Singapore.

William Anh Nguyen entered Vietnam on June 9 as a tourist and rented a room at a guest house on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, in HCM City’s District 3.

According to Vietnam News Agency, he joined a crowd causing disorder in the Nguyen Van Troi -Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street area. At the junction of Nam Ky Khoi Nghia-Ly Chinh Thang in District 3, William Anh Nguyen demanded the police to remove vehicles blocking the route of the crowd.

When his request was not granted, he climbed on top of a vehicle and called on the crowd to follow.

His acts were recorded on video by security services and submitted as evidence. The city police issued an arrest warrant on June 12 for followed by decisions and he was taken into temporary custody and then held on remand on June 14.

The municipal police commenced criminal proceedings against and temporary detention of William Anh Nguyen for disturbing social order on June 15.

However, according to the court’s conclusion, William Anh Nguyen had no previous convictions. At the police station, he admitted his violations and admitted to his actions. He claimed his violations were caused by his lack of knowledge about Vietnamese law.

William Anh Nguyen whose parents are Vietnamese also pleaded for clemency.

The court decided to expel him from Vietnam.
