Strong cold spell to hit northern region

A cold spell is forecasted to arrive in the northern region on September 7.

Nguyen Van Huong from the National Centre for Hydro-meteorology Forecasting said the mountainous areas in the northeast would be affected first. The cold spell will spread to other areas in the northern and north-central coast in the evening.

Northern provinces such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh will have rains from the evening, at some places, the total rainfall will reach 50-100mm per day. Some provinces including Quang Binh and Quang Tri in the central region will have rains on September 8-9.

According to Huong, the cold spell will see lowest temperatures of around 19-21 degrees. Night temperatures in mountainous areas may drop to 17 degrees. The temperature in Hanoi will start dropping on the evening of September 7 with heavy rains and strong winds. The temperatures on September 8 and 9 are 21 to 24 degrees.

"We have also warned about extreme weather phenomenon that can be caused by seasonal transition such as flashflood and landslide in mountainous areas. Hail and tornado may also occur," he said.

Ship owners are also warned about strong winds on September 8 and 9.
