The deadlines were announced at the conference held on February 21 about ground clearance work for the eastern sector of the north-south expressway during 2017-2020 period. According to the Ministry of Transport, this is a key national project. VND118bn (USD5m) will be spent on 11 construction projects with a total 654km of road across 13 provinces and cities such as Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri and Khanh Hoa.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung emphasised that the project must meet deadlines which are to be completed in 2020 and opened to traffic in 2021. That means many constructions must be started quickly this year. "Ground clearance, compensation and resettlement works must be done well so that the project's progress will not be affected," he said.

The Ministry of Transport was asked to inspect and direct the investors and management boards over ground clearance and to prepare required documents to ensure the project's schedule. They will also work with locality authorities to publicise information about the ground clearance plans.

"The locality authorities should show public the importance of the project and how it will improve our socio-economic development. This expressway will benefit the government, investors and public alike," he said.

Over 4,800 hectares of land must be cleared, 3,763 households and many private, public establishments will be relocated for the project. Local authorities were urged to deal with resettlement and compensation issues quickly.
