Hanoi traffic accidents kill 265 people in H1

Hanoi saw an on-year decline in the number of traffic accidents in the first half of this year but a rise in deaths.

According to the Hanoi Department of Police, between January and June, 640 traffic accidents occurred in the city, leaving 265 dead and 407 injured.

This was seven lower compared with the same period last year, but there were 15 more fatalities.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Duong Duc Hai, head of the municipal board of traffic police, expressed his worry about the rise in death number. He urged the city’s traffic police units to tighten control over traffic violations to help mitigate the number of accidents.

Hanoi has set a target to cut traffic accidents by 5-10% this year and reduce traffic congestion spot by just 8-10.

Last year, Hanoi reported 1,365 traffic accidents, killing 544 and injuring 916 people. The figures represented an on-year decrease in terms of accidents, deaths and injuries.
