According to the HCM City Department of Education and Training, in the 2019-2020 school year, the city sees a rise of 76,000 pupils compared to the number of the last school year. The secondary level reported the sharpest rise at nearly 26,500 pupils, followed by primary level at nearly 21,800 pupils and high school level at 20,000 pupils.

Some districts including 7, 9, 12, Go Vap, Tan Phu, Binh Tan, Thu Duc, and Binh Chanh saw the biggest increase in the number of students due to fast urbanisation.

The rise has put more burden on many schools which have over 50 pupils each class.

The department, however, vowed to ensure enough place for 100 per cent of pupils living in the city. The city aims to have 300 classrooms/10,000 pupils by 2020.
