In the latest announcement released on Tuesday evening by Vinaconex Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Viwasupco) which operates the Da River Water Plant, the company said that they had completed the cleaning of all pipes and tanks and their water testing results met the requirements from the Ministry of Health.

"Following direction from the Hanoi People's Committee, we have resumed tap water supply since 8.30 pm on October 16 but people should only use it for washing as according to warnings issued by the committee," the announcement said.

A resident in Thanh Xuan District, Hai Ha, said that her house got tap water again from 10 pm on Tuesday. Although there was no longer a strange smell but she did not dare to use it for drinking.

"We’re still using bottled water for drinking and cooking," Ha said. "It's costly and not easy to find now but we still have to try and wait until local authorities say tap water is safe for drinking."

Viwasupco is now supplying some 300,000 cubic metres of water daily to some districts in Hanoi including Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem, Cau Giay, Hoang Mai, Hoai Duc, and Thanh Tri through some other water companies in the area.

Nguyen Huu Toi, director of the Fresh Water Business and Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (Viwaco) which is providing water to over 150,000 customers in Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem and a part of Hoang Mai, Cau Giay and Thanh Tri districts said that each day, about 100,000 cubic metres of water from the Da River Water Plant is consumed.

"Although testing results now showed that the water from the plant met requirements for drinking, we are still cleaning the pipes and tanks here at residential areas so people should only use it for washing," Toi said.
