A man in the central city of Danang has been infected with Zika virus, the Ministry of Health reported on May 25.

According to the ministry, Vietnam has reported 265 Zika cases in the Central, Southern and Central Highlands regions after the first patient was found in Khanh Hoa Province in March 2016. Both Zika and dengue fever are transmitted by the Aedes species mosquitoes.

Since early 2020, Vietnam has had 26,857 dengue fever cases in 58 provinces and cities. There are three fatalities cases in Binh Dinh, Binh Phuoc and Tay Ninh.

The number of dengue cases is still rising in several central and southern provinces and cities like Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Dong Nai and HCM City. As Vietnam is entering the rainy season which will create an ideal environment for Zika and dengue fever to spread.

The Ministry of Health has issued the Document 2775 about reinforcement on preventive measures against Zika and dengue fever. City and provincial people's committees were asked to have plans to carry out the measures including killing the larvae.

All households in the vulnerable areas will have their water tanks and containers checked.
