Five killed, 30 injured in bus accident in Kon Tum

Five people have died and 30 others injured after a passenger bus plunged 20 metres down a steep hillside in the central highlands province of Kon Tum on Saturday morning.

According to a police report, the accident occurred at around 4am when a 48-seated bus fell off a hill in Sa Thay District.

 

"The bus was carrying 38 passengers including six children," the report said. "Five people have died and all the injured passengers have been sent to Ngoc Hoi District's General Hospital for treatment."

 

The bus driver, Mai Hai Nam, told police at the scene that he just lost control of the bus. His blood samples have been taken to check for alcohol or traces of drugs.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh who is chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety has asked local authorities and the health sector to make all efforts to save the injured passengers.

Police are further investigating the cause of the accident.

On Friday evening, a car with five people inside also fell into the sea in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province. Only the driver managed to get out while four others, two women and two children were stuck inside. A woman and two children have died, and the remaining woman is now in critical condition.

The driver told police that it was raining hard at the time of the accident and he had lost control of the car.
