Hanoi’s authorities have set a target to shorten distances to bus routes in the next three years.

The municipal people’s committee has issued a plan on public transport development in the 2021-2030 period.

Under the plan, in the next three years, around 80-90% of local people should have access to bus routes within 500 metres of their homes instead of the current 1-1.5 kilometres at present.

Hanoi is home to the biggest bus network with 122 routes in all 30 districts and towns. However, currently, the network serves just 16.08% of local residents.

The committee has asked agencies to consider public transport development with the priority of the connection to populous residential areas, industrial parks and increase coverage to suburban areas.

The city will create favourable conditions to attract investors in public transport. Hanoi is seeking government approval for issuing preferences in using ODA for public transport projects.

Public transport should use environmentally-friendly engines, meeting Euro 5 emissions standards.

The city will intensify activities to publicise public transport.
