Vietnamese doctors have held a consultation to seek treatment regimens for two Covid-19 patients who have returned home from the US.

The consultation this morning, January 7, was the first in 2021, and it attracted senior experts from many big hospitals in Vietnam. It was chaired by Professor Nguyen Gia Binh, Head of the Consultation Group for Severe Covid-19 Patients under the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control's subcommittee.

The first case is a 61-year-old woman or Patient 1464 who is being treated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi. Her condition has worsened so she has to use a ventilator.

The woman from the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau returned to Vietnam on December 21 and quarantined in Hanoi. On December 26, she faced health problems such as tiredness, loss of appetite, and shakes. She then tested positive for Covid-19.

She has a medical history of hypothyroidism and had the right thyroid removed.

At the consultation, doctors said that she had some symptoms similar to the Covid-19-infected British pilot, or Patient 91, who was treated in Vietnam. So the use of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and dialysis method was proposed for her.

The second case is a 74-year-old man, or Patient 1405, who is now staying at Quang Nam General Hospital. He has many underlying diseases such as Hepatitis B, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart failure. Currently, he is also facing pleural effusion.

According to doctors, the man needs to be closely monitored.
