Vietnam will receive three million doses of Astra Zeneca and three million doses of Pfizer vaccines from now to September.

Vietnam aims to reach herd immunisation in 2021

On June 15, Dang Duc Anh, head of the National Institute Of Hygiene And Epidemiology, said one million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine will arrive in Vietnam in late June and early July. Two million doses will arrive by the end of the third quarter.

Pfizer also announced that three million doses will arrive in Vietnam by the end of the third quarter and more will be sent to Vietnam in the final quarter. However, the number of doses and date may change depending on the global situation.

According to Anh, Vietnam aims to secure 150 million doses of vaccine in 2021 for 70-80% of the population to reach herd immunity. However, as of now, Vietnam has received only 2.9 million doses of Astra Zeneca and given 1.55 million doses to the population. Frontline workers, people in vulnerable areas and workers at industrial zones are prioritised.

Anh went on to say that the vaccines often have a six-month shelf life and Vietnam only has three to four months to roll out its vaccination programme after taking into account transportation time. TThe Ministry of Health has worked with the Ministry of Defence to best manage the Pfizer vaccine.

Vietnam has given urgent approval to four vaccines including Astra Zeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm and Pfizer.
