HCM City’s districts with low rates of Covid-19 vaccination would face the risk of resurgent viral infections due to the new Omicron BA.5 sub-variant, according to municipal Department of Health Director Tang Chi Thuong.

The Ministry of Health have announced the appearance of the subvariant BA.5 in Vietnam and according to Thuong, the subvariant is more highly infectious and could cause more serious conditions for patients.

To date, around 490,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine in HCM City have not yet been used as the rate of the fourth Covid-19 jab vaccination has remained low in many districts, Thuong commented.

The local Department of Health is willing to reopen Covid-19 treatment facilities if sub-variant BA.5-infected cases increase, particularly in low-vaccinated districts such as Thu Duc, Nha Be, Go Vap, Tan Phu, Binh Tan and Binh Chanh.

The BA.5 subvariant was first found in South Africa in January this year.

Professor Phan Trong Lan, Head of the Ministry of Health’s Department of Preventive Medicine, said that BA.5 is more serious than sub-variants BA.1 and BA.2.
