This will be Tokayev’s first visit to Vietnam after he took office in 2019, and the first by a Kazakh President to the Southeast Asian nation during the past 12 years.

The visit takes place at a time when the traditional friendship and cooperative relations between Vietnam and Kazakhstan are developing positively. Both countries maintain regular visit exchanges to outline orientations for future cooperation.

Two-way trade turnover between the two sides has increased 28% annually since Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) of which Kazakhstan is a member signed a free trade agreement in 2015. Kazakhstan is currently Vietnam’s second largest trading partner in EAEU which also includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.

Kazakhstan has five FDI projects valued at US$500,000 in Vietnam, focusing on science-technology, information and communication technology, wholesale, retail and repair services.

The two countries have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of culture and sport. Tourism is another potential cooperation field. On average 10,000 Kazaks visit Vietnam every year, and the number is expected to rise in the coming time.
