In celebration of the 1000 year Anniversary of Thang Long, Thong Nhat Park (also known as enin Park) will be upgraded with an investment of VND65 billion ($3.5 million).

The People’s Committee of Hanoi has decided to spend almost all of the money on construction and equipment because they do not need to implement site clearance.

According to Nguyen Van Khoi, Vice Chairman of The People’s Committee of Hanoi, the park will be improved in order to showcase its importance as the central park of the capital, to create a space for cultural activities and improve its popularity as a clean and entertaining destination for Vietnamese and tourists.

The lanes, pavement, and parking area will be upgraded as part of the plans. There will also be more green trees and sign boards in the park.

Thong Nhat Park restoration will be completed before the 1000 year Anniversary of Thang Long

The Nguyen Van Troi statue area also will go through restoration processes. In addition, an amusement area of 3.5 hectares housing the Safe Traffic Village, gaming area, and walking lanes, will also be improved. Kiosks will no longer be allowed here.

The multi purpose stage area covering 2.2 hectares will be improved with more lighting and stone benches while the “Hanoi railway station” will get better fencing.

The implementation will be within the first two quarters of 2010 and be completed prior to the 1000 year anniversary.

Thong Nhat Park was once Hanoi's dumping ground for household waste. Originally called Seven-Hectare Lake, the area lacked any appeal until after the French were defeated. Ho Chi Minh adorned the grounds around the lake with gardens, paths, statues and even an area for theatrical performances. The newly named Reunification Park became, and still is, one of the most beautiful parks in Hanoi. It was later renamed Lenin Park when the then Soviet Union befriended Vietnam during the American War.
