Vietnam has new president, PM nominated for second term

Truong Tan Sang has been voted in as the new president of Vietnam, but Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is on track to stay in his seat.

Winning the election with 97.8% of the vote, Truong Tan Sang\'s term in office will be from 2011 to 2016.

Sang was elected by the National Assembly\'s Standing Committee on the afternoon of July 23. After a discussion session, the vast majority of NA deputies agreed with the proposal.

Speaking at the office inauguration ceremony, Sang said that he accepted his new post with great honour, and is fully aware of the responsibilities it brings, saying, “I will try my best to serve the nation and the people."

While accepting the office, Sang emphasised some of the tasks that face the nation, including building a fair and reliable jurisdiction based country and amending the constitution of 1992. He also called for the other judicial reforms, developing a socialist-based market economy and further development for the economy and industry.

Regarding international affairs, he believes in an independent and multilateral form of diplomacy. He prefers peaceful negotiations on disputes over territory and economic privileges, based on international law.

Mr. Sang was born on January 21, 1949 in the southern procince of Long An. He holds a degree in law and is the former head of the Central Economic Committee, as well as the former secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Communist Party Committee.

Current Prime Minister sole candidate for next term

As the newly-appointed president, Truong Tan Sang nominated Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung as the sole candidate for Prime Minister for the 2011-2016 term. If reelected, Dung will serve a second consecutive term as Prime Minister.

President Sang also nominated Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan as Vice President and Mr. Truong Hoa Binh as the Tribunal President of the Supreme People’s Court.

One change that President Sang recommended was for Nguyen Hoa Binh, 53, to replace Tran Quoc Vuong as the Director of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.

The NA will have a session to discuss these personel proposals tomorrow afternoon, July 26.

At the 11th National Party Congress, in January 2011, Ms Nguyen Thi Doan and Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh were elected as members of the Communist Party of Vietnam\'s (CPV) Central Executive Committee. Truong Hoa Binh was elected as a member of the CPV’s Secretariate of Central Committee while Nguyen Tan Dung became a member of the CPV’s Politburo.
