An investigation to uncover the cause of fierce blazes in Hoang Lien National Park is underway. The investigation is focused on whether or not burning fields for land cultivation started the blazes.

Police, in collaboration with relevant agencies, are spearheading the investigation, according to Pham Van Cuong, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Lao Cai Province on February 23.

Cuong rejected the possibility of intentional burning.

According to a news source, before the incident, a family living at Ban Ho Commune, Sa Pa District, burned fields for cultivation. There’s a possibility that the fire started from there. However, police have not reached any final conclusion at this point.

Regarding responsibilities of provincial leaders, Cuong said that after a meeting with relevant agencies on February 24, the People’s committee will consider the responsibility of each individual and department, then will report to the Prime Minister about their punishment.

“The fire caused a negative impact on the environment and socio-economic life of Lao Cai Province. For the sake of people’s safety, the People’s Committee has decided to suspend travelling activities to Phan Xi Pang peak,” said Cuong.
