A project plan for Vietnam\'s largest international airport, approved by the Prime Minister on June 14, was made public in Long Thanh, Dong Nai Province today, August 12.

The Long Thanh International Airport, construction on which is set to start in 2015, will be built in three phases to be completed in 2035 when it will be fully operational and capable of handling 100 million passengers a year.

With an investment of more than USD10 billion and covering over 5,000ha, Long Thanh is expected to become a competitive international airport and a key entry point to the Southeast Asian region. The airport, which will be located around 43km from HCM City, will serve 90 percent of international as well as 20 percent of domestic flights, diverting a major chunk of passenger traffic from HCM City-based Tan Son Nhat International Airpor.

Funding for the project will come from Government bonds, official development assistance (ODA) and private sources.

The airport is planned to open to public in 2020 after first phase development, enabled to handle an annual capacity of 25 million passengers. More than USD6.7 billion will be spent on ground clearance and construction during the first leg.
