Vietnam halts registration of flawed Toyota's

Mr. Trinh Ngoc Giao, head of the Vietnam Registery Department (Ministry of Transport) said the department will stop registering all Toyota cars from the U.S that are subject to technical errors and will likely be recalled, starting from March 2010.

According to the statistics, since the beginning of the year, the Toyota Group has recalled about 8.5 million of their cars due to accelerator pedal, floor mat and brake pedal problems. Car models that were affected are RAV4 2009-2010, Corolla 2009-2010, Matrix 2009-2010, Avalon 2005-2010, Camry 2007-2010, Highlander 2010, Tundra 2007-2010 and Sequoia 2008-2010.

While Toyota’s crisis has not ended, a number of other automakers also have to call back some of their car models due to technical problems.

General Motors (GM), one of the world’s largest automakers announced that 1.3 million of their cars in the U.S, Canada and Mexico were recalled over power-steering malfunctions. Nissan has recalled almost 540,000 cars in North America, and a few Asian and European countries; Huyndai called back almost 500,000 cars; and most recently, Honda announced that they are recalling about 410,000 cars in the U.S. following braking problems.

Although many other world automakers are continuing to recall their cars, Mr. Trinh Ngoc Giao said the department has yet to extend the decision to stop registering car models that were faulty by brands other than Toyota.

Previously, the Ministry of Industry and Trade reminded the Ministry of Transport to tighten management of importing affected cars into Vietnam or until these cars have been fixed, in order to protect consumers rights and ensure safety for other traveling vehicles on the road.

Furthermore, the Ministry and Trade also required cars that had already been imported into Vietnam to be checked thoroughly and if problems are found, there must be a solution to ensure the safety of traffic. The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication must regularly follow the news and update any information regarding the recall of cars and inform the consumers as well as car importing companies in Vietnam.
