Vietnam finishes 4th at ASEAN ParaGames

Vietnam finished the 6th ASEAN ParaGames whose closing ceremony was held yesterday night in Solo, Indonesia at the fourth place with 44 gold medals, trailing to Thailand, the host Indonesia and Malaysia.

Despite of failing to meet its target set ahead of the event, Vietnamese players have found condolences for breaking as many as three Asian records and 30 other records of the Southeast Asia.

The week-long tournament saw Thailand reign supreme dominance for the fifth time in a row with a total 123 gold medals, 47 of which were from track and field events and 33 others hauled in by their swimmers.

Host, Indonesia who sent their biggest contingent of some 250 athletes clinched the second spot with a total 113 medals, an improvement from their fourth ranking at the 5th and 4th Para Games in 2009 and 2007 respectively. The majority of Indonesia's gold medals came from swimming and athletics.

Malaysia settled for third place with 51 gold medals.

Vietnam and the Philippines clinched 44 and 23 gold medals respectively for their fourth and fifth place standings in the final medal tally.

A total 302 records were broken during the games, with athletics contributing to the majority of it, followed by swimming and power-lifting.

More than 1,200 athletes took part in the games which was started on December 15.

Myanmar wll host the seventh edition of the Asean Para Games, scheduled in Naypyidaw, Myanmar in 2013.
