Petrol stations hedge bets on price hike rumours

Petrol stations in central Thua Thien-Hue Province have closed in recent days in the belief that petrol prices will surge, bringing them greater profits.

A petrol station owned by Dong Phu Agriculture Collective in Quang Dien District closed with a signboard that reads ‘Staff meeting, temporarily suspensed’.

Roads along Quang Ngan Commune, Quang Dien District and Dien Hoa and Phong Chuong communes in Phong Dien District revealed shut stations with ‘temporarily suspensed’ signs.

A station in Huong So Ward in Hue City and one owned by Dong Phu Agriculture Collective under PetroVietnam Oil Corporation (Pv Oil) in Quang Dien District have also closed. The claims for this suspension in business vary, from spurious electricity cuts or staff meetings.

Meanwhile, there have been a rising number of unlicensed petrol stands in both Hue City and some other districts.

The limited operation of the petrol stations has caused problems for local people, especially those in the countryside who are having to take their vehicles much further to get fuel.
