Bomb attack on Hanoi gold shop

The Criminal Police Department have arrested a suspect thought to be responsible for the bomb attack on a gold shop on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Hanoi.

The attack at Hoang Tin shop on June 21 left 10 people injured.

Police have named the man as Ta Van Thanh, born in 1987, Bac Giang Province.

On June 21, Thanh entered the premises and passed a note to the owner, Vu Hai Duong. The note instructed Duong to hand over the shop’s gold to Thanh or he would explode the bomb he was carrying.

Duong fought back and managed to throw the bomb outside while shouting for help.

Thanh ran, and after 30 metres the bomb exploded, injuring four people.

The locals quickly called the Emergency Police Unit 113, and Dong Da, Ba Binh district, and Cat Linh, Dien Bien Ward police and firefighters.

Amid the chaos, Thanh had climbed onto a rooftop and robbed a passer-by's motorbike. He was caught soon after.

Thanh admitted he tried to robbed the gold store. The explosives, detonators, knives, batons were bought from a stranger at Tan Thanh Market in Lang Son. Thanh used four kilos of industrial explosives in the bomb. On June 20, Thanh scoped out a potential target.

The explosion left at least 10 injured including the employees of the cosmetic shop next door and passers-by. The bomb destroyed almost the entirety of the gold shop, and the advertising boards of two nearby shops.

A truck driver parked in front of the gold shop was severely injured and was transferred directly to Saint Paul’s Hospital. Thousands of people living on the street are still in shock following the explosion.

At the Dien Bien Ward's medical facility 50 metres away, five employees of the gold shop and cosmetic shop are receiving first-aid treatment.

"Most of those injured suffered injuries to their hands and legs and concussion from the shock wave but fortunately, its nothing serious." the head doctor said.

The police are still investigating the case.
