Coach Hoang Dinh Hong said from Beijing that eight masters – four men and four women – from Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, the US, Germany, mainland China and Canada would compete.

The men will compete in a one-leg round robin format while the women will take part in a two-leg round robin.

The male winner will walk away with US$10,000 while the female winner will receive $7,000.

The Vietnamese representatives are Asian/national champion Nguyen Hoang Lam (men's) and national champion Cao Phuong Thanh (women's).

In addition to xiangqi, chess, brigde, go and draughts will also be played.

Last year in Beijing, Vietnam pocketed a silver medal in the women's xiangqi event thanks to former Asian champion Ngo Lan Huong.
