A wind-power station will be installed on southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province's Con Dao Island this year and be put into operation in the third quarter of 2015.

The project's investor is Green Resources Technology Development Joint-Stock Company (Greenmade). It will estimatedly cost VND345 billion (US$16.37 million).

The project's contractor is PetroVietnam Engineering Consultancy Joint Stock Company (PV Engineering).

The station will have two wind turbines with a total capacity of 4MW, which will be installed 2.5 km offshore.

The contractor is looking for suppliers for wind turbines so that it can choose an optimal design to ensure that the station meets international standards at a reasonable cost, said Do Van Thanh, general director of PV Engineering.

According to Nguyen Hong Quang, general director of Greenmade, the company will continue to invest to upgrade the station's capacity after commercial installation.

The wind-power station will help provide clean energy and reduce the costs of power production by 35 per cent compared to diesel-powered stations, currently the only source of electrical generation on the island.

The wind-power station will also help save VND38 billion ($1.8 million) per year for the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province budget.

In addition, the wind-power station will give local residents and businesses access to power that will cost less than what is currently offered.
