The massive death of fish and shrimps occuring in Ngan Truoi River over the past few days has come as a shock to many people.

Hundreds of fish and shrimps in an 8 kilometre stretch of the river were found to have perished and were floating along the river’s surface in large white patches. Farmers of Ngan Hamlet (Huong Dien Commune, Vu Quang District, Ha Tinh Province) were reportedly devastated when they discovered the strange occurrence on June 16.

In the same afternoon, workers from CAVICO Company (the unit that is currently working on Ngan Truoi - Cam Trang Irrigation Project) as well as local people from communes No.1, 2, and 3 of Vu Quang Town also spotted either dead or dying fish and shrimps cluttered in dense amounts on both sides of the river. Many people were shocked and deeply horrified at the sight, but some simply shrugged and tried to collect as many fish and shrimps as possible to sell in the markets later.

According to fish traders in Vu Quang Town’s market, no one has been buying any fish or shrimp for fear that they were contaminated ones that died in Ngan Truoi River.

The cause for these massive death is currently being investigated by authorities.

Ngan Truoi River’s drying up is likely to be the cause.
