It was not overload that led to the collapse of Chu Va 6 suspension bridge in Lai Chau Province recently, said the Ministry of Transport.

The direct reason for the incident was a sudden failing of screws attached to the girders

Around 50 people in the funeral go through half of the bridge but their total weight is smaller than the bridge’s loading capacity.

A report from the Ministry of Transport showed that the bridge’s key cable system was from South Korea with a load capacity of 72.4 tonnes and the screw system of the two bridge's sides had a total loading capacity of 200 tonnes.

According to the ministry, the direct reason for the incident was a sudden failing of screws attached to the girders.

Earlier, Minister of Transport, Dinh La Thang, said the screws used in the construction process were not up to standard and led to the collapse of the suspension bridge on February 24, which injured 38 and claimed eight lives.

The Ministry of Transport’s inspection task force also said screws failed to meet technical design requirements.

Meanwhile, local people around the Chu Va 6 bridge in Lai Chau Province have discovered that the bridge's piles were built of brick instead of concrete, which they think may have contributed to the collapse.

Based on the collected evidence, the supposition of resonance due to the movement of the funeral procession and weather factors was ruled out as a possible cause, especially as there were no unusual weather factors that day.

The Ministry of Transport sent documents to the People’s Committee of Lai Chau Province and the Ministry of Police proposing that they consider prosecution of the individuals and organisations responsible in the case.
