 >>  Vietnam seeks ways for overseas nationals to maintain nationality
The Prime Minister has approved a five-year extension to the 2008 Nationality Law requiring Overseas Vietnamese (OV) to register their citizenship to July 1, 2019.

The extension offers millions of OV a reprieve from suffering the ill-fated repercussions of losing their citizenship which is set to go into effect this July 1.

The decision comes following the Ministry of Justice’s proposal, noting that a small number of Vietnamese abroad have re-registered for their citizenship status as the July 1 deadline is approaching.

The PM authorised the Ministry of Justice to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to draft and submit a draft Law on amendments and supplements to some articles of the 2008 Nationality Law at the regular Cabinet meeting for April.

Amendments will be submitted to the upcoming session of the National Assembly for consideration.

Holding Vietnamese citizenship offers many advantages to Vietnamese expatriates. Among the many advantages for OV in protecting and holding their sacred right to citizenship is that it is more favourable for them if they desire to return to Vietnam to visit their families or to live. Investments they make in Vietnam also enjoy many preference incentives.
