The Hanoi police have decided to prosecute a child trafficking case at Bo De Pagoda, which was well-known for taking in orphaned and abandoned children.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Trang and Pham Thi Nguyet

Police have detained two individuals, Nguyen Thi Thanh Trang and Pham Thi Nguyet. According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Cao Khai, deputy head of the police team combating trafficking of women and children, the initial investigation indicates that a child was sold for VND35 million (USD1,600).

Due to difficulties, Cu Nguyen Cong's mother abandoned him at the gate of Bo De Pagoda. Cong was then adopted by Long, a resident of Long Bien District.

By the end of 2013, Nguyet offered to pay Trang if she allowed the child to be adopted by another family. Later, Trang asked Long to bring the child back to the pagoda because they were being inspected, and Trang complied.

Trang and Nguyet had found the child's biological mother and asked her to write an agreement to give up for adoption. Trang then sold the child for VND35 million and kicked some of the money back to the biological mother.

Later, Nguyet told the biological mother that Cong had died in the care of his adopted family.

Police are still trying to verify Cong's death and have asked for the cooperation of Thich Dam Lan, head monk of Bo De Pagoda.
