School cancelled in Nghe An for measles scare

Many students in Tuong Duong District, Nghe An Province, have got off school for two weeks due to the suspicion of a measles outbreak.

Vi Tan Hoi, chairman of the People’s Committee of Tuong Duong District, said that the district cancelled class for 127 students in Pieng Coc Village, Mai Son Commune for a period of two weeks in order to prevent the spread of measles.

According to the district People’s Committee, since early October, many students in Pieng Coc Village have shown symptoms similar to those of measles.

By October 14, at least 48 children in Pieng Coc Village had suffered from skin rash, and many became very ill, said Bui Dinh Long, director of Nghe An Province’s Department of Health. Patient samples will be sent to the Ministry of Health for testing.

On October 8, an 18-month old child in the village died after presenting with measles-like symptoms. Long, however, said that the death was due to pneumonia and malnutrition.
