It is forecast that motorbikes will remain a popular means of transportation in Vietnam in the next three to four decades, according to information from a conference in Hanoi on November 18.

Motorbike expected to be popular in Vietnam for 30-40 more years

The conference on automobiles and motorbikes was held by the National Committee for Traffic Safety and the World Bank.

Even as the number of private cars increases and public transport develops, the preferred way to get around among Vietnamese people is still by motorbike.

According to a research by the World Bank, in order to solve transportation problems, separate lanes for motorbikes and automobiles should be created. It was also recommended that the electric bicycle be considered as a viable alternative to alleviate smog and noise problems.

According to the national plan on road traffic towards 2020 and a vision until 2030, the number of motorbikes will be curbed at 36 million by 2020.

However, the Ministry of Transport’s statistics showed that by the first quarter of 2013, the number of registered motorbikes in Vietnam had reached 37 million. The figure is expected to continue rising.
