The port is being built on 179.3ha in Duong Dong town with a passenger terminal and other buildings, a wharf, a breakwater, and other facilities.

It will cost VND1.64 trillion (US$76.4 million), with nearly VND477 billion ($22.2 million) coming from the Government and the remainder from other sources.

Vingroup's Phu Quoc Investment and Development JSC will bring in 30 per cent of the investment amounting to VNĐ493 billion and manage the BOT (build-operate-transfer) segment of the port.

Construction is scheduled for completion in January 2017.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang said passenger ports played an important role in promoting local tourism around the world.

He said once operational the port would facilitate transportation and pave the way for socio-economic development of Phu Quoc Island District.

The project is expected to promote Phu Quoc's tourism over the world besides providing a host of socio-economic benefits.

Le Khac Hiep, Deputy Chairman of Vingroup's management, said the port showed the effects of the Government and Kien Giang Province's investment policies.
