Speaking at the launching, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien stressed that since the first organ transplant was successfully performed in Vietnam 20 years ago, thanks to ceaseless efforts of Vietnamese doctors, scientists, the entire healthcare system and the joint support of the whole community, Vietnam’s organ transplant sector has made significant progresses.
The sector has been seen positive shifts in increasing awareness and participation of the public in organ donation, she said, adding that thanks to the selfless donations of many organ donors, thousands of lives have been saved.
However, tens of thousands of people are fighting for their life in organ failure and waiting for organ transplant surgery while the number of organ donors are modest, she noted.
The campaign was launched to widely spread the humanity of organ donation as a good deed as it gives the gift of life to others. It thus calls on individuals nationwide to promote compassion and sharing to sign up for organ donation after death or brain death.
At the launching ceremony, participants watched reports featuring the lives of people who are suffering from organ failure and listened to talks by leading Vietnamese professors and doctors working in organ transplant.
The Ministry of Health also presented certificates of merit to outstanding organ donors on the occasion.
