Corruption has cost Vietnam VND950 billion (USD45.2 million) in losses, with only half of the stolen assets or money recovered, the Chief Government Inspector Huynh Phong Tranh said.

Tranh announced the figures in a report on corruption prevention at a National Assembly meeting yesterday. So far this year, 46 people who were leaders of agencies and companies faced punishments related to corruption cases, including four which faced criminal proceedings; while another 37 were dismissed or received warnings.

According to Tranh, to date, only around VND505 billion (USD23.8 million) has been recovered out of the total VND950 billion lost through corruption this year.

Corruption, especially in public investment and the management of state capital in businesses, is causing serious losses to the national budget, the Inspectorate noted.

The government’s ability to catch those responsible for these crimes seems to be limited.
