Nguyen Xuan Phuc becomes new prime minister

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has been elected prime minister by the National Assembly.


 Newly-elected Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc took an oath of office at his inaugural ceremony on April 7

Phuc won 90.28% of the vote as the only candidate in the ballot that took place this morning.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc officially took office with immediate effect today.

Phuc, 62, comes from the central province of Quang Nam and has a degree in economics.

He has held various positions including in his local party, was vice chair of Quang Nam People's Committee, deputy Government Inspector, chairman of the Government Office, and served as a deputy prime minister for the 2011-2016 term.

Phuc has been a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee for the 10th, 11th and 12th tenures. He is also member of the Politburo for the 11th and 12th tenures and a National Assembly deputy for the 11th and 13th tenures.
