A mother in Bac Giang Province is calling for help as her son who has been forced to become the family’s sole breadwinner after illness and misfortune struck both her and her husband.

Nguyen Thi Huyen said her health deteriorated after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of poverty, she did not have much expectations for the future. Currently, Huyen weighs just over 30kg and has to use crutches to move around. "I can only live for one day at a time. Sometimes it's depressing," she said.

Her husband, Pham Dinh Tung, already has weak health and is deaf but he still found work to support family. Unfortunately, a cement bag accidentally fell on Tung during work and broke his legs. Since then he has become even weaker and also depends on crutches.

As Huyen and Tung cannot work anymore, their son Pham Dinh Khanh, who is in 11th grade, has become the breadwinner of the family. Khanh helps making tofu for a relative in Nghe An Province during summer vacation in order to bring his parents to hospital. He'll return home in a few days to work on the rice fields too.

Huyen is worried for Khanh and only hopes he could still continue studying.
