Formosa company head admits to fish deaths in staff letter

Chairman of the Hung Nghiep Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Company, Chen Yuan Cheng, has just sent a letter to the whole staff, underlying that the company's leaders will try to ensure a stable working environment for their staff and comply with the law.

The letter was sent out on June 30 morning, ahead of the long-awaited announcement on the causes of the mass fish deaths later in the afternoon.

In his letter, the Formosa's leader claimed that their sub-contractors had caused the disaster during their trial operation according to the investigations by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

"This is the results we don't want to hear, but we respect the investigation of the government," Chen wrote.

However, he confirmed in the letter that in any case, the company would continue operating and they put the safety and interest of their staff first. He expressed gratitude to the whole staff for their hard efforts and contribution during the past eight years since the company started in 2008 with lots of difficulties.

The letter also said that the company is now closely co-operating with government agencies to deal with the consequences. He concluded by suggesting the company wanted a long and stable development future in Vietnam.
