A family in Ha Nam Province is in need of help to save a mother who is suffering form leukaemia and her child from respiratory failure.

Nong Thi Hao gave birth to her first child at 30 weeks and suffer from respiratory failure. Hao's child is being treated at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi while she stays at the National Institute of Haematology & Blood Transfusion.

"It felt like everything was falling apart. I was very healthy and then suddenly, I was told that I had cancer and I was carrying a child at the same time. I was only at 26th week of pregnancy. I refused treatment to save the baby but then I had to decide on premature birth because I got seriously ill," she said.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuan from the National Institute of Hematology & Blood Transfusion said, "Hao has both leukaemia and blood disorder Thalassemia. Her condition has become more stable after giving birth but we can't give her chemotherapy yet. Leukaemia needs expensive and long-term treatment."

Hao's child has respiratory failure

Hao also has some kind of pimple on her neck that can expose her to blood infection during chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, Dr. Do Tuan Anh at Bach Mai Hospital said Hao's child couldn't cry at birth and they detected respiratory failure almost immediately. "He is better now and doesn't have to use the ventilator and strong antibiotics anymore but he looks really pale so we are doing some tests to see if he is anaemia," he said.

Hao's husband, Duong Ngoc Tung, is shouldering all the family’s burden. He is trying to borrow money everywhere for his wife's treatment and his relatives are helping him borrow money for his son's hospital charges but he is still unable to find VND10m (USD454) deposit for his wife's hospital charge.
